Typically, lodging in Big Sur and the surrounding areas is quite expensive, and a room for two can run upwards of $200/night. I scoured the internet for days until I found this hidden gem in Carmel Valley. The Blue Sky Lodge was absolutely perfect.
The overall decor and look of the place is very original and has a ton of character. It felt like I had been transported back to California in the 1970s! A couple of online reviews I had read prior to visiting said the lodge needs to be “updated,” but I disagree. Everything was completely clean and functional, and that’s what matters - it's just an older place. For me, it was perfect, but everyone has different preferences. In addition to giving off a totally nostalgic feel, the room also included a balcony, two queen beds, and a kitchen - for just $80/night! Split between three of us, this was more than doable.
The main lobby of the lodge is connected to a library (pictured below), complete with a piano and many old-fashioned furnishings. I could have spent a full day in this one room. Much of the library is lined with windows floor-to-ceiling, which has a poolside lounge on the outside, overlooking the pool and mountains. I loved seeing the abundance of plants lining the windows and grounds - it shows how much this place has a heart and is cared for.
Upon check-out, the staff was kind enough to gift each of us room key tags as souvenirs. This place was a little taste of heaven, and I can’t wait to return someday.
